Last Sunday saw the return of our Apple Pie Competition, and this year, it took place in both our Church Road and Clondalkin cafés. This much-loved competition began two years after our Greystones café opened, back in 2004. There was a bumper harvest of apples that year, and lots of different people started dropping in boxes of cooking apples to us, as they had too many and knew that we would make good use of them. Before long, our shop was swimming in apples, so we started giving them away to customers.

One day, a customer arrived in with an apple pie she’d made for Dave and Steve, to say thank you. A few days later, another lady said that she would also make an apple pie for them. They bantered her about whether her apple pie would be as good as the previous lady’s and she vowed to make a better one! It was then that the lads came up with the idea of running an apple pie competition, to celebrate all the local apples. Soon, a date was set for a Sunday afternoon in early October. Lots of posters were made and put up on the noticeboard in the shop, and a notice was even placed in the local parish bulletin! The shop gave away free cooking apples in the lead up to the competition, to promote it and build some hype, and a mix of people from the community were asked to be judges; there were a couple of older ladies, some teenagers, and a few in-between – it was a real cross-section of the community!

When the day arrived, there was great excitement. Thirty apple pies of all different shapes, styles and sizes were entered. Lots of children had also baked entries, so a kids’ category was created. There was live music, prizes for the winners, and a great atmosphere all round. It was such fun, that every year since, the Apple Pie Competition has been a cherished community event, and this year was no different. We were blown away with the amount of entries, in both of our cafés! The standard was so good that it was difficult to pick a winner! Massive thanks to everyone who came down and made the day so special in both locations! Take a look below, at some snaps we took on the day!
