This week, in our Friends of The Happy Pear series, we chat with TV presenter, DJ, model, and fitness fanatic, Vogue Williams, about her new book, Everything, in which she gives a sneak peek into her day-to-day life, and offers advice on fitness, healthy eating, beauty, and style. We asked Vogue about finding balance in life, how she deals with stress, as well as her tips for getting a good night’s sleep. We hope you enjoy!
Congratulations on your new book, Everything, which is all about finding balance in life. How do you find balance in your life?
When it comes to balance, I like to live my life according to the 80/20 philosophy. I don’t believe in ‘clean eating’; it’s impossible to live by and I don’t think it’s healthy. It’s important to enjoy yourself and not to restrict yourself too much in life.
Do you ever struggle to find balance and what is your advice for those times when it’s difficult?
I often struggle to find balance and I fall off the wagon regularly. I struggle with my food a lot, to be honest. I have lots of recipes in my book for making food for the whole week, and I find that it really helps to have my meals prepared in advance. However, there are times when drinks after work turns into a night out. When that happens, I don’t stress about it, I just try to eat healthier the next day.
Do you think there is pressure on people nowadays to have it all?
I think that people put a lot of pressure on themselves. It’s important to take a step back and realise that no one’s life is perfect. Anything you see on Instagram is just a version of someone’s life that they want people to see. Everyone is putting their best foot forward on social media; for example, I don’t put photos of myself lying on the couch with pizza on my face!
Tell us about your typical morning routine.
My morning routine is different, depending on whatever time I have to get up for work. I usually get up at around 6.30am or 7am. I take my dog, Winston, for a run first, then, I come home and have a shower. If I am filming, I usually jump in the car with a pre-made porridge, made with almond milk, and topped with almond butter and a bit of honey. I eat my breakfast and do my makeup in the car on the way to work.
What is your favourite meal of the day?
My favourite meal of the day is definitely breakfast. I love having anything that includes avocados and eggs. I am just back from a holiday in Greece, so at the moment, I am really enjoying smashed avocado, with chili flakes, fresh coriander, and feta.
What is your fitness routine?
I try to go for a 30-40 minute run every day, as my dog needs to be taken out anyway. I also try to do 30-45 minutes of weights five days a week.
How do you look after your mental health?
I find that exercise really helps with my mental health. It helps me to combat my anxiety, as well as encouraging me to eat better. Taking a step back from things, and making sure that I have time to chill out, is really important to me. I also don’t really drink alcohol that much anymore. I do go out and have a drink, but I keep it to once every two weeks or so.
How important is getting good sleep to you and what do you do to ensure you get a good night’s rest?
I stop looking at my phone about an hour before I go to sleep and I always watch a box-set, as I do like watching something before I go to bed. I’m also really enjoying reading at the moment. I recently went on a big book buying spree and bought loads of new books. I think reading before bed really helps to settle you. I like to go to bed early because I am up so early in the morning, so I am usually in bed by about 9.30pm or 10pm.
What is your number one beauty tip?
My number one beauty tip is to go for a facial or do your own facial treatment at home. I am obsessed with facials! Your skin is something you live in every day, so you should look after it as best you can. I also recommend wearing SPF every day. People think I am mad because I will always have SPF 50 on my face, but you can still get a tan while protecting your skin from the sun.
